On the confirmation
of their right, by the Imperial Chinese Government, the Eastern Extension Australasia and China Telegraph Company
took steps
to
lay
a cable to
Canton, and with a
view
to ascertain
a
suitable route for the cable, the matter was brought to the notice of His Excellency the Viceroy of
Canton,
on the 4th September 1882, by Her Britannic Majesty's Consul at that place. His Excellency the Viceroy, although fully recognizing the right the Eastern Extension Australasia and China Telegraph Company had obtained from the Chinese Government, was disinclined
to oppose the laying of the cable, owing to the great local difficulties which he
